Seeds keep the strongest players apart. An organiser can set them from the ranking table.
Seeding decides where each player is placed in the draw. It exists so the strongest players do not meet each other in the first round.
The first and second seeds are placed as far apart as possible. They can only meet in the final.
An organiser can set the seeds automatically from the league ranking table.
When they do, the points you have already earned decide your place in the next draw.
In doubles a pair is seeded on both players together, not on the person who filled in the entry form.
If you are not seeded, your place is decided by a draw of lots.
It is random, and it is drawn fresh for every category.
A category can have fewer entries than the draw has places.
The empty places become byes, and byes are given to the top seeds.
Seeding is the organiser's decision. They may seed from the rankings, seed by hand, or not seed at all.
Seeding from the ranking table is something the organiser chooses to switch on. If they do not, your points do not change where you are placed.
A bye means there was no opponent in that round. It moves you forward, and byes go to the top seeds because those are the places left empty when a draw is not full.
