My child lost the first match. Is that the end?

Some tournaments run a second draw for players knocked out in the first round, so they get more matches.

The short answer

It depends on whether the organiser turned on a plate draw for that category.

A plate draw is a second bracket for players who lost their first match in the main draw. Losing once puts them into it.

If it is on, your child keeps playing in the plate draw and can win it.

If it is not on, the first loss ends that category for your child.

The tournament page shows the plate draw beside the main draw when one exists.

Step by step

  1. Open the tournament page and choose the category.

  2. Look for a plate draw beside the main draw.

If there is no plate draw shown, the organiser did not run one for this category.

A plate draw with four players who each lost their first match in the main draw.
  3. Find your child in the plate draw to see when they play next.

Things that go wrong

Only first-round losses go into the plate

A player who wins a match and then loses a later one does not enter the plate draw. It is for first-round losses.

Ask before you enter if this matters to you

Whether a plate draw runs is the organiser’s choice, made for each category. Ask them if you want to know before entering.
